Techniques & Methods Of Non-Toxic Pesticide Alternatives

Non-Toxic Pest Control

By Robb Russell, Sites By Robb

Most pest control problems occur because of neglected sanitation and poor moisture control. Most any pest can be prevented by some method of sealing up your home using screening , caulk, backer rod and the replacement of other construction materials like ridge and dryer vents.

These concepts I mention are just as important as using any pest control product and purchasing pest control services locally. Hiring a good competent pest control company that practices good integrated pest management practices  is always a good idea because they have been trained to use the least invasive products with the lowest toxicity to solve household pest problems . In theory if you can live with a few occasional pests you will make the most significant impact in  using non-pesticide methods.

Man putting caulk on baseboard

Remember caulking up cracks and crevices in, around and near all hiding places is always a good idea and well worth the time.

Sanitation

The key to least toxic pest control is in having a clean home. Train your family not to leave dirty dishes in the sink, take out trash regularly and use garbage bags and clean garbage receptacles. Set aside a day once a year to get behind the stove, refrigerator and other appliances and clean up. Remember it all starts by not leaving insects or bugs a free lunch.

Moisture Control

Bugs, or insects need water to survive just as you and I do. Insects will often live nearby or visit and gather water and bring it back home. Eliminate all plumbing leaks and faucet drips. Try to keep the areas around your sinks always dry.

Caulking

Cracks provide homes for bugs & insects like ants, roaches, and silverfish. The best prevention to stop small insects from living in your home is not to allow them any small cracks and crevices and to fill them up by using caulk, and properly sized wood trim boards. If you want to KEEP PESTS OUT of your kitchens and bathrooms look at sealing up every crack and crevice using caulk. Remember caulking up cracks and crevices in, around  and near all hiding places is always a good idea and well worth the time.

Vents and Screens

If you have a home missing screened doors and windows please replace them. Most homes have fly and other pest problems because of an un screened door or window left open.  Birds, opossums, raccoon’s , squirrels, rats and mice also enter homes because of defective, broken screens or vents or holes caused by other animal damage or act of nature . Ridge and gable vents in time will eventually deteriorate or worse yet not properly installed  and should be inspected annually.

Off  The Shelf Pest Control

Today pest control products can be found on the shelves of many department, drug, or corner store . Many of these products work well if you understand the target species, and select the best and least invasive method to eliminate them.  While shopping you will find

  2. Pheromone traps for attracting certain types of male pests by using a scent hormone  lure to trick and trap unsuspecting male insects.
  3. Flypaper
  4. Rat & mouse snap traps and electronic mouse  traps.
  5. Bug Zappers (Inside only)

Insecticidal Soap
Fleas and ticks on dogs and other pests can often be prevented by using  Insecticidal Soaps on regular treatment basis as directed. These soaps are specially designed to kill soft shell insects such as the common cat flea. Keep the lawn cut short and look into treating pet bedding, kennels and areas they congregate outside.
Insect Growth Regulators
Birth control for bugs !! These are low toxic chemicals that are man made versions of natural growth regulators found with in insects. These pests prevent insects from reaching maturity and stopping them from reproducing a next generation.
There are many products out their for the Do it yourself pest control guys. The difference between many professionals and the homeowner involve years of experience and first hand knowledge in pest ID  or bug identification what pesticide, when and how to use and apply them.

Repellents
Repellents do what they are supposed to do – repel  pests except for electronic repellent ultrasonic devices which are often proved to be a scam and waste of money. Good examples of repellents would be mosquito repellents in use today and citronella candles.  Some woods such as eucalyptus, camphor, citronella and wormwood.
Biological Control
Examples of biological control would be using cats to catch mice, or gecko lizards for cockroach control, or the use of small wasps to control meal moths.
Home Remedies
Many techniques of natural pest control have been used for years  many of them work but some of them end up being old wive’s tales too.  Some folks use bay leafs to keep roaches out of kitchens, or mix special ant bait form boric acid and jelly.
